September tea-time: SYCL and Kokkos: Similarities and Differences

Thomas Applencourt from Argonne National Laboratory will give a talk entitled “SYCL and Kokkos: Similarities and Differences”
Thomas Applencourt is a Computational Scientist at Argonne National Laboratory interested in various programming models (OpenMP, SYCL, OpenCL), low-level programming, and profiling. He is now the Chair of the SYCL Working Group.
SYCL and Kokkos: Similarities and Differences
SYCL is now over a decade old. It is an open standard backed by Khronos (the same group behind SPIR-V, Vulkan, and OpenCL) with multiple implementations targeting different backends (AdaptiveCpp with CUDA/HIP, for example). On Aurora, an Intel GPU-based supercomputer, SYCL is used as a backend for Kokkos. In this talk I will give a tour of SYCL’s core concepts and map them onto the Kokkos model that we already know — when they match and when they differ. I will touch on our collaboration with some Kokkos users to bridge some gaps between the two. Finally, I will cover what is changing in the upcoming versions of SYCL: the deprecation of buffers, in-order queues by default, and a new kernel-launch API.
