Ben Ryan from NVIDIA will give a talk entitled “Acceleragent: An Agentic AI Approach for Porting HPC Codebases to GPUs”
Ben is a Developer Technology Engineer at NVIDIA, where he focuses on HPC workloads and AI enablement. His recent work includes developing an AI agent to automate most of the effort required to port large Fortran HPC codes to GPUs. Previously, Ben was a scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory where he contributed to the Jayenne radiation transport code and the Parthenon performance-portable multiphysics framework. He also led an LDRD Directed Research project to numerically model giant planet formation. Ben received a PhD in Astronomy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2018, where he wrote a hybrid parallelism relativistic radiation magnetohydrodynamics code to simulate black holes.
Acceleragent: An Agentic AI Approach for Porting HPC Codebases to GPUs
NVIDIA is developing an agentic AI tool to accelerate porting entire production HPC codes, including Fortran codes, to GPU-compatible languages. Our approach targets entire codebases, ensures functional correctness, provides traceable code modifications, and adds unit tests. Our procedure for designing the AI workflow that decomposes the problem into manageable tasks is based on years of human experience porting large Fortran codes. Correctness is enforced throughout the porting process by running both AI-generated and user-defined tests, and using AI agents to automatically fix errors as they are detected. We have successfully ported representative HPC codes to GPU programming models, including CUDA C, OpenACC, and Kokkos.
